Kurama-dera Temple
Kurama-dera temple is located in the rich natural environment. It is the head temple of the Kurama – kokyo Sect and the three venerated deities of the temple have been worshipped by local people since the 8th century.
Starting from the mountain gate, a path with its numerous hairpin curbs (ascent) leads to the main hall (about 45 mins walk from the gate to the main hall). You can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring and colorful leaves in fall.
The temple is also associated with some legends: Tengu or long-nosed goblins and Yoshitsune or Ushiwaka-maru, tragic hero of samurai who lived in the 12th century.
Kufune Shrine
Kifune Shrine is located alongside the clear Kibune River. The shrine is dedicated to a deity of water and matchmaking.
Between Kurama-dera Temple and Kifune Shrine, you can either take public transport or walk in the mountains.
【Important】
If you choose to walk between Kurama-dera Temple and Kifune Shrine, the walk between the two takes about one and a half hours. Walking the paths includes some steep slopes (ascent and descent) , roots as well as wooden and stone steps ; in a heavy rain, walking this part NOT recommended. Poles might help you if you are used to using them. Please also refer to the below photos (slide show).
Shisen-do
Shisen-do was built in the 17th century as a hermitage of Jozan Ishikawa : he was a samurai and retainer of Ieyasu Tokugawa (the first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate). Jozan was also known as a scholar of Chinese classics as well as a landscape architect.
Shisen-do’s gardens are well known for its exquisite and unique taste. Azaleas, wisterias, maples and many other kinds of flowers and plants can be appreciated in the gardens.
